Race (Fiction 59: Two)

Spoken: "Ready?" Eyes widen.

A smile, broad and uninhibited. Quick glance left; right. Ears lifted and eyes level, sparkling. Fingers twitch. Hands fidget. Toes dig. Knees shake.

Spoken: "Ready?" ... Eyes widen.

Replied: "Go!" Limbs flail, earth is disturbed. Laughter. Shoes slide. Gravel. Mock desperation. Exaggerated sprinting. Children's laughter.

Arms pumping, knees high, chin high. Quick look back. A smile, broad and uninhibited.

Laughter.
