sleeping-while-awake
I could feel my conciousness slip and everything lose solidity - my chair and legs bowing beneath me and my surroundings put on "mute."
I had the most surreal sleeping-while-awake experience today in class. First of all, let me set the stage by saying that I stayed up waaaaay too late last night playing a new game (Jedi Knight II, Outcast) and woke up early this morning to go to work and then to my weight training class - so I was not exactly preparing myself well to stay awake for my 4-7 PM Lab for CDES 286. I love the class, but sometimes it's hard to battle my body's incessant demands for sleep.
Anyway, I was sitting in class, fighting like hell to distract myself from sleeping by constantly shifting my sitting position and concentrating hard on what it was my professor was talking about (which only seemed to make my head hurt and my eyelids feel as though little men were jumping off my eyelashes and grabbing hold of them on the way down), when it happened: the whole world bent for a split second. It had to be one of the single weirdest things I've ever experienced. I could feel my consciousness slip and everything lose solidity - my chair and legs bowing beneath me and my surroundings put on "mute." What made it even more odd was that I was relatively conscious before it happened, and very much so afterwards. The whole thing happened quite unexpectedly and (interestingly enough) it woke me right up.
Weird. Last week I found out that I am being awarded the "Outstanding Student Award" for the Chico State graduating class of 2002, which apparently means I have the highest GPA. The cool thing is they want to give me $1000 for my efforts (imagine my surprise)! Also weird. There is going to be a banquet on the 24th of April where the President of the university will shake my hand, give me a check, ask me what my future plans are and smile and pose with me. My parents and girlfriend and friends and other university "important people" will be there. I hope the food is good.
